The sun moves, shadows change; there is only a short period of time that an artist has to capture the shifts of light and color when painting outdoors - but it is this very desire to distill the energy and freshness of nature that drives the plein air painter. Susquehanna Valley Plein Air Painters was formed to bring together artists who share this passion.

Great day to paint! A little brisk with snow flurries in the air. Had something interesting happen while I was painting. A gentleman came out of the Fairfield Inn and over to view my painting dressed in a confederate uniform. He asked to see my painting over my shoulder and I asked if he was on his way to work. His reply was that he and his wife were heading out to ride horses since he was in the infantry and wanted a day off his feet and ride with the cavalry. He complimented me on my painting and proceeded back to the Inn to pick up his wife. You can only have a converstation like that in Adams County.
LION PARK By Cecelia Lyden
oil/strteched canvas
8x10
Black Friday found 5 of us painting at Lion Park in Marysville, rather than looking for a parking space in some mall. It was billed as the last warmish day for a long while and, listening to the wind howling outside this morning, made me grateful that I went. Yesterday's morning was warm with blue skies, but by the time we met at 12:30ish, the clouds had rolled in and a breeze started to make it cooler. Wimp that I am, I began painting faster and faster, and lasted for only an hour and a half. This is my last paintout in the Susquehanna Valley till spring. Come January, I will don my snowbird outfit and will be paintng outdoors in [hopefully] balmy Florida.

Black Friday Paint Out by Julie Riker
9x12 oil
I avoided the mall on this Black Friday and painted with some of our group along the creek instead. I did this study in 2 hours...not sure if I will do anything more to it or just leave it as it is.
Just loved the sky.... Dianne Lorden
I'm very impressed with all of your determination to get out there this fall and work in the open air - great job to everyone! I've wanted to, and we've had great weather, but the timing has just not been there for me. So, I thought I'd share this en plein air pastel I created over the summer, done from the deck of our beach house, in Southern Shores, on the Outer Banks, N.C. You'd never know there was a storm on the way - it was just beautiful out! This painting is currently on exhibit at Brath & Hughes Fine Art, Mechanicsburg, Pa. My artwork, and blog notes, can be viewed at: South Mountain Sketchbook

THREATENING RAIN By Cecelia Lyden
oil/board
11x14
When Julie Riker and I started out to paint Tuesday afternoon, the weather was warm and balmy. We changed our original location from the Marysville side of the river to the Fort Hunter side.By the time we travelled to the other side of the River and found a nice view of the Rockville Bridge, the weather had changed from warm and balmy to overcast, with rain threatening. Luckily it remained balmy and was such a pleasure to sit there, watching and painting the rapidly changing sky. However, our paintout was shortened, only painting for about an hour and a half. I finshed the painting at home.

TWO TREES DOWN, 11x14, oil by Sharon Benner
Veterans Day and its 70 degrees in Hanover. These two trees were laying in Lake Marburg and I thought the scene was interesting with the back lighting and the reflections. This is what I call a truism, as I painted it quickly to capture the light, shadows and reflections in a loose, impressionistic style.

STORMY SKY By Cecelia Lyden
oil/stretched canvas
8x10
I could not remember if I had posted this painting, done on site at Vivian Brandler's charming home. I searched through the OLD POSTS twice and could not find it.So forgive me, if I am repeating myself. I punched up the sky a bit, using the stormy, cloudy day view outside my window.
