Known and Unknown by Dianne Lorden

Known and Unknown, Cemetery Hill was the last pastel I made during the Gettysburg Festival. The morning was lovely and the Soldier's National Cemetery was shining and peaceful. I don't really like painting monuments; I feel like they are someone else's artwork and I can't really do them justice. But this worked up quickly and didn't turn out too badly. A park ranger stopped to chat ... we learned his passion is poetry, and he even gives Civil War poetry ranger talks at the amphitheater. You just never know what you're going to find out when you go out to work en plein air!
