Meet SVPAP's New President,
Donna Berk Barlup

It would be nice to be able to paint en plein air in Pennsylvania year round but the weather does not always cooperate.  So I guess I am forced to take my paints and travel as much as possible to places that allow me to paint in the great outdoors without losing any fingers to frostbite.

Plein Air painting  is relatively new to me and I have learned a great deal from the other artists in Susquehanna Valley Plein Air Painters, by reading and watching videos of other artists working, taking workshops and by trial and error.  Watercolors is my medium of choice.  I find them challenging.  There is very little chance to make corrections.  You just need to throw caution to the wind and have at it.

I have a Bachelors degree in Art Education from Kutztown University and have taken many graduate classes at various university and studied one summer in Europe.  I spent 6 years teaching Art in Harrisburg (PA) School District and retired after 30 more years from teaching Northern York County School District (also in PA).  Teaching Art was one of the most gratifying things I have done.  It was a joy to watch my former students move on and sometimes become Art teachers or artists themselves.  My own son has a Fine Arts degree and is a webdesigner and teacher.

It wasn't until my retirement 5 years ago that I finally had the chance to devote my time to my painting.  I am presently the President of the Susquehanna Valley Plein Air Painters.  I am also a member of the Mechanicsburg Art Association,  Pennsylvania, Louisiana and Baltimore Watercolor Societies, and Daily Painters of Pennsylvania.  I have been juried to signature status in the Baltimore Watercolor Society.  I also travel as often as I can.  I just returned from a trip up the Danube.
