I painted at Codorus State Park today, the first time this Spring. The trees were flowering and the underbrush was starting to green up. It was hard to simplify with all the colors jumping around. See more of my work at www.sharonbenner.com I've altered this painting to simply the shadows. I think it is much better.
"Carroll Valley Spring"
by Larry Lerew
Acrylic on Archival Canvas Panel 11 x 14"
First plein air painting of 2013. Drove down Rt. 116 through Fairfield, Pa and spent the morning of Thursday, April 18th painting with my friend Dorothea Barrick at the Carroll Valley Township Park. This bright and colorful painting is how I interpreted a nearby stone farm house on an overcast, drizzly day from under a dry pavilion. The trick is to not really paint what you see but what you feel. Painting is poetic and to many plein air painters are way to literal.

On Tuesday I painted with SVPAP member Jim Bricker in Gettysburg.
We drove around a while scouting locations.
This was painted at a historic farm inside the park.
I liked the arrangment of outbuildings and the pattern of shadows.
The sun was in and out, so I did my best to catch it while I could.
Above is the painting in progress and below is the finished piece. I added a few minor adjustments after I brought it home.

FORT HUNTER BOAT LAUNCH
Eight of us showed up for our first "official" paintout at the Fort Hunter boat launch with lots of friendly greetings, after a long, cold winter. The landscape was not very interesting -bare trees, no flowers in bloom, some sunshine .But the temperature was so beautifully warm, and as artists we can "see" color in the distant hills and in the shadows and sunlight on the nearby trees. All considered, this was a very pleasant and satisfying first paintout.

Fort Hunter Barn and Bridge
Old Fort Hunter Filling Station
Old Fort Hunter Garage
View of Rockville I think.
Fort Hunter Mansion on the Hill above the creek.
This rocky bank would be interesting to paint.
Had a great time getting out with the SVPAP group today at Fort Hunter, just above Harrisburg, PA.
Spent my time making these 5 quick sketches to shake some of the cobwebs off. Didn't have the courage to paint today, it's been a long winter.
Today was our first group paint out of 2013 at Fort Hunter boat launch area, overlooking the Rockville Bridge.
It was great to be out in the warm spring weather and to see familiar faces.
I am feeling like my plein air skills are a bit rusty, so I will have to work on that.
