THE COVE, 12x16, oil

The trees are just starting to turn in Codorus State Park.  The lake is at a low level and there is new green grass growing where water should be.  The small stream of water flowing into the lake and the colorful lake bottom made interesting color patterns for me to paint.  I'm hosting a plein air paint out in Codorus State Park on 8 Oct.  9am.  The address of the ranger station is 2600 Smith Station Rd., Hanover, Pa. 17331  You can visit there first and get a map of the park.  I'll be painting on the hill above the marina launch, on Marina Rd.  (by the Monument and bird houses)

As I have been posting my paintings from my
trip to Martha's Vineyard, each one takes me back
to the beautiful scenery on the island, the wonderful
colors of the land and the see, and the amazing time
I had painting with good friends.  It was an experience
I will remember and treasure forever.

SUNSET AT FORT HUNTER By Cecelia Lyden

oil/stretched canvas
12x24
www.cecelialyden.com

Julie Riker and I went to Fort Hunter, on Friday, a beautiful, mild fall evening to paint a sunset. I have painted sunrises and sunsets before , but always from my photographs. This was my first attempt to paint the sun setting en pleine aire. Boy, what pressure! "Now you see it. Now you Don't"
Dramatic sunrises and sunsets depend on cloud formations. This sky had only one cloud. The sky and the water were serenely smooth and placid. I decided to create my own drama and added some livlier brushstrokes and tints.

Painting at the Harvest of the Arts by Julie Riker

I had a blast today painting the cool cars at the Harvest of the Arts.  SVPAP's booth looked FANTASTIC and we did our best to spread the word about the upcoming show at Carlisle's Arts Learning Center.  People are especially interested in watching painters paint.  Thanks Donna for coordinating everything and putting so much work into the day.

I liked this view of Great Rock Bight Beach so much,
that I decided to paint it again in the afternoon
when the tide was low, and more of the rocks
in the water were visible.  I can really
understand why Monet painted his series of paintings.
Painting the same scene
during different times of the day and in varying
light/weather conditions creates a unique picture, as
well as a unique painting experience.

Retired by Julie Riker

 8x10 oil
Another painting from my weekend at the Chincoteague Island Plein Air Event.  I love images of abandonment - of nature taking over what was once new.
There is no shortage of scenes like this on Chincoteague Island.  I could have created 5 compositions from this one property but chose to crop in on mostly the rusty truck with a bit of the old cottage.
This painting sold quickly at the show and was very popular.  I could have sold it again 20 times!  Maybe next year I should just paint rusty trucks!

An Original Watercolor by
Donna Berk Barlup

What a wonderful week! I had the opportunity to spend a plein air painting week in Martha's Vineyard with 6 other artists.  The weather could not have been more perfect and the views are spectacular.  This very small fishing village is what I expected to see in Martha's Vineyard.  Lots of boats and fishing shacks were there.  We saw the most amazing and beautiful sunset with such intense colors. And the seafood was delicious!

"Nocturne Painting" by Debra Tritt Kreiger

8"x10" Acrylic on canvas board

This was an adventure for sure. I never painted in the dark and it proved very interesting and fun to do. The tree was up lit so it created a nice center of interest. This was in the yard where we stayed at Martha's Vineyard. Made even more fun my painting buddies and hubby were with me!

I just came back from a plein air painting jaunt to
Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts.  I was really looking
forward to painting the marshy areas, and was very
happy to find this marsh in Menemsha at low tide.
Locals who stopped by to talk to me while I was
painting said that this was the lowest they had
ever seen the tide in this area. Lucky me :)

Just got home from a wonderful and inspirational painting trip to Martha's Vineyard, MA. This is the West Chop Lighthouse in Vineyard Haven. It was a beautiful, but windy day. Met some wonderful people from the town! I had all but the doors and windows finished when it started to sprinkle. Just finished that up in the studio. More to come!!!!

Saturday is Harvest of the Arts from 9am-5pm in Carlisle. I will have a booth#46 there. Time to think about those Christmas gifts!!!!

THE STONE STABLE and THE OLD SYCAMORE AT FORT HUNTER By Cecelia Lyden

oil
11x14
www.cecelialyden.com

This painting was plein air inspired and started, but studio finished. I arrived a little late on Sunday for the Gallery Walk at Fort Hunter. I walked around for a while, looking for something inspiring to paint. I finally settled for this building, a stable. It had an OK shadow, a semi cheery color, an interesting roofline and a nice little tree in the crux of the two sections of the building. Not that enthused with my choice of subject matter, I "putzed" around, setting up, when suddenly I noticed this huge sycamore behind the building, almost completely hidden by dense foliage. I was suddenly motivated and began to work out the composition. I since have learned that this tree is listed in the book, Penn's Woods, and is estimated to be over 300 years old-so glad I spied it.
I blocked in the whole composition and began to paint, but before I finished, it was near 5 o'clock, quittin' time. I still had several problems to work out, so I worked on them in studio.

I just came back from a plein air painting jaunt to
Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts.  The weather
was beautiful, the scenery was sublime...so many wonderful
things to paint.  This one I did on Friday.  The trail to
get there was long and steep, but what a treat it
was to see what was waiting for me at the end of
that trail!

Summer's End by Julie Riker

Where did the last month go? It's been so long since I posted here and now the summer is over.

8x24 oil

This past weekend I participated in the Chincoteague Plein Air event for the fourth consecutive year.
Summer's End was one of 7 paintings that I did during the 3 day event which ended in a Saturday evening sale.  I brought this unusual size canvas with the intent of painting a beach scene but decided to use it for the sunset on the Wildlife Refuge.  I had to work quickly to capture the changing colors in the sky.  It did not take long before it was too dark and I could no longer see my work.  As soon as the sun went down the mosquitoes came out and chased me away.  I finished the painting that evening in my hotel room.

I will be entering this painting in SVPAP's October show at Carlisle Arts Learning Center so you will be able to see it in person.
