ROAD TO THE RIVER By Cecelia Lyden

Julie and I traveled north to Liverpool to paint on one of those perfect days last week. We thought we would paint the Susquehanna, but decided the quaint Americana town was much more interesting. After cruising the streets, Julie chose a picturesque pink house and I was attracted to reddish-brown boxlike structure and the bright yellow flowers growing on the side of the road.

I blocked in the composition, basic values, colors  and shapes on site, but all the details were added in studio. In spite of my studio work, I've posted the painting on this blog, because the inspiration for it --the atmosphere, the tranquility on this beautiful summer day, the sunlight and rich shadows were all  acquired on site.

Bright, sunny, summer skies make for deep, rich shade--thanks Sue.
