THE GREENS OF FLORIDA BY Cecelia Lyden

This site of my last paintout in Florida was at a local botanical garden. I arrived early. The sun was still low in the sky and there was lots of deep shade, especially under that unusual tree with the huge trunk. I love shade and sunlight contrasts, but you can barely see the different sections of the trunk, I'm going to lighten some of the tree up a bit. Otherwise, the lush greens, rich shade and bright sunlight on the tree and some of the plants really were a pleasure to paint.

SAVANNAS PARK PRESERVE STREAM By Cecelia Lyden

This is a stream in the Savannas Park Preserve in Ft Pierce, Fla, where a  couple of my fellow painters spied two alligators in the water. I stayed put-didn't even venture a peek. They, my fellow painters and the alligators, can run a lot faster than I.
I have painted in this park many times. This section of the stream is surrounded by many different palms and other vegetation. Their shade, the deep green growth in the water contrast with the sunshine, clouds and blue skies and have made for beautiful scenes. I got a really good start on this painting--I was very satisfied with the composition and the placement of colors and values-but I needed to refine and define more. I did the finishing touches in my makeshift studio.

This is another painting I did in Savannas Park, from the bridge, a couple of years ago. Again, deep, rich  shadows in the water inspired me as much as the palms.

YELLOW FLAG, CAUTION By Cecelia Lyden

The winds have been really strong this winter off the Atlantic. Most of the days , a red flag has been displayed. Today the sun was strong and the winds were a mere calm breeze, but a yellow flag meant caution, warning you to be careful in the water.
